I remember awhile back you said you use an early not so bloated version of Winamp.  I am installing aps on a new hard drive and I agree the old versions are were much better than the ones that came after AOL bought Winamp.  Which version do you prefer?

I used Winamp for a while and archived a few of the old versions. I've uploaded a zipped copy of v503 (July 2004) to my Bio but I'm not sure if it was that or v265 (October 2000) that I used.

Give it a try and see what you think.

Someone recommended version 5.551 to me recently (running with the Winamp Modern skin...drop it down to Winamp Classic if you want) and I have been rather pleased. AOL had been under pressure to lose the bloatware or completely lose the Winamp fan-based audience ...again whatever works on your machine
I've placed the file here if anyone wants it.

Also included the excellent audio enhancer program called DFX...makes any cheap stereo card sound like a million bucks...your ears will thank you later :)

I have used many version over the years and I particularly did not like the 5 verson with all it's pop ups and taking me to the internet until I learned how to shut that stuff off.  I never liked having stuff I would never use.  I do like the fact that it plays more audio formats and some video, so I guess I'll try it again.  Thanks guys.

believer in using the latest version of winamp to feature bug fixes and security hole fixes, so I use version 5.56, however, I always use the LITE version because it doesn't contain all the bloatware that the other versions do.. cause all I want is something to play music and that loads up a ton of songs at one time.  I stuck to V2.91 for many years, but the latest is fine and I haven't experinced any problems/crashes with it.  I use it when I conduct name that tune trivia games in an online chat program.  Most of us who do the quizzes use the Lite version of winamp.  You do have to dig around at the site sometimes to find the Lite Version. I don't think they really want you to use it because it doesn't have all the advertising and bloatware as I said before.  But old-time winamp users demanded a bloatware free version so they came up with the Lite version.

When I installed this version I declined the option to install a bunch of stuff so I'll see how this works.  Thanks.

you enjoyed yourself.  Aren't they great people?  Really welcoming.  And it seemed to surprise you where they were all from..... nice variety... but mostly Aussies, UK, canada and US.  And that oldies room I mentioned is a lot of fun too.... all pre-1989 songs.

I love listening to that Aussie accent.  Looking forward to seeing you there again tabs.

Very hectic and loads of fun. I love the fact that it is people from all over who love just being silly and smart at the same time. I think some folks on this site would like it too. Again, thanks for inviting me!!!
