Born Salvatore Philip Bono in Detroit, Michigan.

Sonny and Cher starred in a popular television variety show, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which ran 1971 to 1974.  Bono and Cher had a daughter, Chastity Bono in 1969.  Six years later in 1975, Bono and Cher divorced.

Bono continued his acting career, doing bit roles such as Fantasy Island and The Love Boat.  He played the part of a mad bomber in "Airplane II" and  Franklin von Tussle in John Waters's "Hairspray."

Bono entered politics after experiencing great frustration with bureaucracy in trying to open a restaurant.  With talk radio host Marshall Gilbert as his campaign manager, Bono was elected mayor of Palm Springs.

On January 5, 1998, Bono died suddenly of injuries from hitting a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort.  Bono's widow, Mary, was elected to fill his unexpired Congressional term, and she has since been re-elected as a moderate Republican in 1998 and later elections in her own right.  She continues to champion many of her late husband's causes, including the ongoing fight to save the Salton Sea.

His final resting place is Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.  His epitaph reads: "And The Beat Goes On."
