Born David Ryan Adams in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

Along with Uncle Tupelo, The Old 97s, and The Jayhawks, Ryan Adams helped spawn the alternative country genre with his band Whiskeytown. When Whiskeytown broke up in 1999, Adams went solo with his backing band The Cardinals. Adams was nominated for a Grammy Award for his song "New York, New York", which was released shortly before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. His song "When the Stars Go Blue" has been performed by Tim McGraw, Phil Lesh, The Corrs, and Blake Lewis, among others.
