Born in Hampton, Middlesex, England.

Blessed with one the most distinctive guitars sounds in rock, May is truly in the upper class of rock's guitar god pantheon.

Brian to play the ukulele and piano before receiving his first guitar as a present on his seventh birthday. Shortly thereafter, May and his father began to build a custom guitar from scratch. Completed two years later, the one-of-a-kind instrument would become known as the Red Special, a guitar that would later become May's sonic and visual trademark throughout his career.

During his college years, May hooked up with future bandmate, drummer Roger Taylor, forming the rock trio Smile. Despite great promise, Smile didn't make it and soon after, vocalist Tim Staffell was replaced by Freddie Mercury. With the lineup change came a new name, Queen, and a new musical direction, heavy rock mixed with grand ballads and a flamboyantly glam look.

Queen exploded on the rock scene in 1973 and became one of rock's biggest acts of all-time until the untimely death of Mercury in 1991.

May issued a handful of solo recordings after that, with none really making any chart impact.

In 2005, Brian May reunited with drummer Roger Taylor, and former Bad Company front man Paul Rodgers to record and tour as Queen with Paul Rodgers

Brian May was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Queen in 2001.
