Roots play deep

R&B debut 4/21/56 for 12wks, peaked at #2
POP debut 9/12/56 for 10wks, peaked at #41

Joe first recorded this back in 1941 with the Art Tatum Band, but it never showed in the major charts

Some trivia
I did some digging (lol, it's Sunday) and will bio three originals. It's very early roots show it as a great 12 bar country blues tune, and was first recorded in 1928 (4 years before it got copyrighted, 1932) strangely enough on the same day for two different recording studios.
1) Bo Chatmon and the Mississippi Sheiks (Brunswick 7080)
2) The Mississippi Sheiks, as the Jackson Blue Boys with Charlie McCoy on vocals, recorded the song as "Sweet Alberta" (Columbia 14397-D), substituting the words Sweet Alberta for Corrine, Corrina

Red Nichols & HIs Five Pennies get the credit for the 1st chart showing back in 1931 (#18)...that's Wingy Manone on vocal (and trumpet)

I'll bio the 3 for your ears.
Sadly enough, Ray Petterson gets the biggest credit at #9 (for his 1960 Pop offering)...I'd take the earlier ones over his any day

Thanks, DON, for the info and the songs!

Does it happen to show in your book
which R & B chart it was with that # 2
showing, sales, jockey, or jukebox?
I've never had the chance to even look at a R & B book, so I don't know what
kind of info it has.

Isn't it against the law to not like a Phil Spector produced song the best? I believe it's listed in the "Back To Mono" statutes.

I'll put a copy of the song as performed by country duo Brooks & Dunn.  They did it on an album by Asleep At The Wheel that was a tribute to the music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.  I guess that means Bob Wills covered the song too.

Thank you, Renegade, for that download.

Although I do like Joe Turner's much better, I also like Ray Peterson's too.  I'm almost positive it is one of the laws in the "Back to Mono" statutes.  :)

Hi, tabs4959,

Thank you very much for your reply.

How is your sisters name spelled,
just out of curiousity?

She spells it Corrine but immediately forgets that when she hears the song!!! Says it's too close for comfort. This is a woman who worships Wanda Jackson I will have you know!!!

That is interesting about your sister.  I wonder how her name is pronounced.

Wanda Jackson did do some good songs that I like too.

Many thanks for your reply!

That one by Red Nichols in particular is very good and reminds me a lot of Joe Turners.

Isn't it curious that the first two charted versions were so similiar?
They seem to have been the preferred
versions among their different audiences and time periods.  Mine too.  :)

And this song sure turned out to have much history behind it that I ever expected!

Whitburn is using both the "Best Sellers In Stores" & "Most Played In Juke Boxes" chart action for this Billboard period of the Joe Turner release (as per the R&B chart book)

I hope Phil is enjoying his "
wall on sound" during his prison stay...I can be brave now, someone took his gun away :)

My fav quote from Phil, was his priceless interview joke...
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPICE GIRLS ALBUM AND A PORN MOVIE ?
The porn movie occasionally has good music.

Thanks for that info, DON.

That joke of Phil's *is* priceless, while I do still like a lot of his mostly early work.  :)
